JUNE 15
The Art of a Softening Heart is an English spoken kleinkunst performance led and curated by Dutch artist David Hayne. The performance is also part of his graduation from ArtEZ Master of Music: The Sound of Innovation.
During the performance, there will be video and audio recording with the purpose of archiving this performance for graduation purposes. There is no intention to film the audience in the process.
A mythified story on homecoming after trauma.
The Art of a Softening Heart is an interactive Kleinkunst performance about my odyssey of loss, acceptance and healing, inspired by art and rituals from Western Christianity, and Judaeo-Christian and Classical literature.
The performance tells the mythified story of how I tried to find my way back home after suffering trauma. During my journey, I travel through the six stages of death with my ALLY with one hope: to feel seen and loved.

Hi everyone! I am David Hayne, and my team and I are finally able to invite you to experience something we've been working on for the last few years:
The Art of a Softening Heart.
It's a mythical journey, an evening filled with music and stories, where I expose my Odyssey of rediscovering trust and vulnerability. It contains some of the songs that I wrote during my process of trauma, therapy and healing, and we will 'fill the gaps' with me telling you what happened in between. You are also invited to be part of this journey, through a few rituals that encapsulate the depth of these stories.
So feel free to join us for [hopefully] a transformative event, where we'll talk about the art of loving ourselves, the other, and the search for a softening heart.
This is my story, but like my father would say:
there is really nothing new under the sun.
Through the story, I want to invite you to reflect on your own life’s journey:
I hope that you’ll see that your actions and those of another are part of a bigger story – where we can heal through community.

I want to lower the threshold for people to experience the performance - I don't want to gatekeep this story. After the performance, there is opportunity to further support my team and me with our work. This can be done by buying merchandise, or by submitting a formal donation. /// David

The performance does not have a break, and will last about 1.5 hours. Drinks are served before and after the performance, in the foyer near the entrance. There are toilets present in the foyer as well. We kindly want to ask you to stay quiet when leaving the performance to go to the toilet.

No there is not. My performance is in English because my body of work is focused on an international audience. And even though I experienced a part of the story in 'Zwolle', it isn't Dutch either. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions afterwards. /// David

The Theater space is part of the CO complex at the Grote Voort. Feel free to park next to the building or behind the gates in the middle of the complex. It's just a ten minute bike-ride to get to the theater from Zwolle Centraal.

While there might be some tension in one or two songs, the overal performance isn't meant to scare. I would even say that my hope for the ultimate feeling is 'compassion'. The stories invoke urgency, and are almost as melodramatic as myself, so I wouldn't say it's 'super happy' either. /// David

That all depends on whether you like it or not, haha. We are excited to continue working on TASH, and to bring it to you wherever you are. If you want to have this event near you, feel free to contact us through www.david-hayne.com
